The impacts of both educational and skill mismatches are estimated considering unobserved heterogeneity, state dependence and attrition bias. Dynamic analysis shows that skill mismatches emerge as a much better predictor of job satisfaction than educational mismatches as the effects of the latter are related to unobserved heterogeneity among workers. Moreover, the current level of job satisfaction appears to be influenced by workers' previous job perceptions, suggesting a dynamic structure for job satisfaction." Previous studies have observed that living in a small labour market increases and spatial mobility reduces the probability of overeducation. This paper examines the influence of region and mobility on the risk of overeducation for men and women. Overeducated individuals are identified with a statistical measurement method. In total, 9.6 percent of all workers are overeducated. A probit model that controls for sample selection bias is used in the empirical analysis. The probability of overeducation seems to depend on the region. In other words, living in a large regional labour market decreases the probability of being overeducated." Method. Data for men and women aged 25-64 who are in the labor force and not attending school were derived from the 1990 Census Bureau Public Use Microdata Sample. Multinomial logistic regression procedures were used to estimate the effect of minority group membership and immigrant status on the odds of unemployment, part-time employment, working poverty, and job mismatch, relative to adequate employment. Results. Descriptive results showed greater overall underemployment among females than males. Blacks and Hispanics had higher unemployment and working-poverty rates compared to non-Hispanic whites and Asians, with job mismatch highest among Asians. Immigrant underemployment was greater than that of the native-born. Asians posted the largest disparity in immigrant versus native-born underemployment, and blacks had the smallest. Multivariate models showed that minority group effects were stronger than immigrant status effects in predicting underemployment. Increased likelihood of underemployment across the different minority groups versus non-Hispanic white workers was not fully accounted for by the expected influences of human-capital, demographic, industry, and occupational variables. Conclusion. The double disadvantage hypothesis of minority group and immigrant status is accepted only for Asian men and women with jobs mismatched to their skills and for Asian women, who are most likely to be unemployed or be among the working poor." (Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)}, Abstract= {"External evaluation of training is based on the employment rates of course graduates, assessed using a number of criteria. The distribution of employment prospects following a training course for the various jobs occupied is studied here by means of a concentration index (the 'gini'). This criterion reflects the competitive positioning of a given training course on the labour market, a position dependent on the competitive advantage it offers in respect of certain jobs. Arguably, then, training courses leading to more focused employment opportunities will achieve better employment results on average, particularly in terms of pay, skill utilisation and satisfaction. Our results demonstrate that these assumptions are confirmed by data from the Cereq Generation 98 survey. The concentration index can therefore help explain the differences in employability rates among training courses and identify likely ways to improve these results." Research on the question as to what constitutes a good match is usually based on the empirical correspondence between employees' formal qualifications and the formal qualification requirements of their jobs, but so far no up-to-date and in-depth information exists on the incidence of skill-based mismatching in Germany. This article uses the BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey 2006, which yields rich information fitting the job-requirement approach, to provide up-to-date and in-depth figures on the incidence of formal and skill-based mismatching in Germany. Moreover, it studies the extent to which mismatching varies with employees' socio-demographic and qualification characteristics and with job tasks." This paper aims at unravelling the incidence of skill mismatch of domestic and migrant workers employed in 13 countries of the European Union, namely Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. (...) Six hypothesis have been drafted for empirical testing. One hypothesis has been made for undereducation. This is assumed to be the case for workers with higher abilities, here defined as workers in supervisory positions. This paper builds on statistical analyses of the data of the large WageIndicator web-survey about work and wages, posted at all national WageIndicator websites and comparable across all countries. Using the pooled annual data of the years 2005-2010, we used 291,699 observations in the analysis. The large sample size allows a break-down of migrant groups according to country of birth in order to better capture the heterogeneity of migrants. Logit analyses have been used to estimate the likelihood of being overqualified compared to having a correct match or being underqualified. Similar estimations have been made for underqualification compared to having a correct match or being overqualified. (...) This study in part confirms the existing literature, in particular the job allocation frictions for the entire labour market. It expands existing empirical findings concerning the reasons why migrants are more likely to be overeducted."
