It also estimates the evasion response of the individual characteristics of the self-employed. It emerges that self-employed report, on average, around 80.4% of their income to the tax authority, which translates into an income-gap of 19.6% which varies significantly by sex, age, and region. In particular, male self-employed taxpayers under-report more than female ones, and they, in general, become more compliant as they age. Particular emphasis is paid to verifying that the income gap observed cannot be explained by other reasons than under-reporting." It focuses on the emergence of new points of view on self-employed migrant women and in particular their search for independence. With the support of qualitative research carried on in Italy, it will set out a typology of motivations and strategies to become self-employed in which, besides a 'family strategy' and an 'independency strategy', a 'mixed network strategy' also emerges. This last focuses on the role of mixed networks (with other foreigners and/or natives) not only in business management but also in the promotion of transnational social activities. Policies that support associations, creating opportunities for gathering and exchanging with local residents and improving the presence of immigrant women in local institutions, could have the side-effect of increasing participation by immigrant women in self-employment, not for lack of alternatives but as a path towards self-fulfilment and empowerment." The percentage of workers engaged in alternative work arrangements -- defined as temporary help agency workers, on-call workers, contract workers, and independent contractors or freelancers -- rose from 10.7% in February 2005 to possibly as high as 15.8% in late 2015. Workers who provide services through online intermediaries, such as Uber or TaskRabbit, accounted for 0.5% of all workers in 2015. Design/methodology/approach The study covers the largest peer-reviewed and working paper databases for labour economics and health studies. These include Web of Science, Google Scholar, Pubmed and the most popular economics working paper sources such as NBER, ECONSTOR, IDEAS, IZA, SSRN, World Bank Working Paper Series. The authors follow the PRISMA 2009 protocol for systematic reviews. Findings The collection includes 63 studies. The outcomes of interest are the number of hours worked, the probability of employment, self-employment and the level of economic formalisation. The authors find that the current literature is vastly concentrated on the USA. Spousal coverage in the USA is associated with reduced labour supply of secondary earners. The effect of Medicaid in the USA on the labour supply of its recipients is ambiguous. The employment-coverage link is an important determinant of the labour supply of people with health problems and self-employment decisions. Universal coverage may create either an incentive or a disincentive to work depending on the design of the system. Finally, evidence on the relationship between health insurance and the level of economic formalisation in developing countries is fragmented and limited. Practical implications This study reviews the existing literature on the labour market effects of health insurance from the supply side. The authors find a large knowledge gap in emerging economies where health coverage is expanding. The authors also highlight important literature gaps that need to be filled in different themes of the topic. Originality/value This is the first systematic review on the topic which is becoming increasingly relevant for policy makers in developing countries where health coverage is expanding." We use a parameterized difference-in-differences approach that captures policy changes at the federal and state level over the last two decades to analyze how the increasing generosity of the EITC has affected married women's self-employment. Results suggest that the average increase in state EITC benefits during that time period increased self-employment behavior of low-income, non-college educated married mothers by 0.9 percentage points. Our measure of self-employment reflects hours spent in self-employment, which we interpret as a real increase in self-employment effort rather than a change in reporting. The increasing numbers now working this way as well as their spread into all sectors, industries and occupations, mean that their work arrangements can no longer be dismissed as non-standard or atypical. Defining them by what they are not is quite simply no longer an option. Our paper examines the various components intertwined behind the taken-for-granted concept of autonomy. Drawing on debates from the legal through to the sociological and HR literatures, we identify three underlying dimensions to autonomy. Our findings offer a policy-relevant perspective on the relative importance of SE and WS employment and help bridge two entrepreneurship research traditions. Our estimated effects of self-employment, at the margin, are substantially larger than identical effects of paid employment. This supports the literature that points to a special role played by self-employed businesses in economic growth. At the same time, the little attention given to SE as a potential engine of growth among policymakers and scholars can be explained, at least in part, by the relatively small total economic impact of self-employment stemming from its small share of the economy. In an austere fiscal environment, however, spending a dollar to stimulate SE is likely to have greater returns as opposed to stimulating WS employment, assuming the costs of adding one SE and one WS job are comparable." We use interview and survey data to highlight how platform workers in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa are normatively disembedded from social protections through a process of commodification. Normative disembeddedness leaves workers exposed to the vagaries of the external labour market due to an absence of labour regulations and rights. It also endangers social reproduction by limiting access to healthcare and requiring workers to engage in significant unpaid 'work-for-labour'. However, we show that these workers are also simultaneously embedded within interpersonal networks of trust, which enable the work to be completed despite the low-trust nature of the gig economy. In bringing together the concepts of normative and network embeddedness, we reconnect the two sides of Polanyi's thinking and demonstrate the value of an integrated understanding of Polanyi's approach to embeddedness for understanding contemporary economic transformations." Second, a wide scope of interrelated, substitutable and polyvalent practices allows the rather few resilient households to gain their livelihood from mixed sources. Among a relevant number of them, direct income transfers incomes play only a minor role, while access to various kinds of common goods is playing a substantial role for resilience in low income households. (Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)}, Abstract= {"Empirical evidence suggests that executive pay is related to the level of product-market competition. However, while most shocks or policy reforms that foster competition tend to strengthen the link between competition and performance-related pay, it can also be the case that increasing competition reduces incentives. Also, as firms may change their pay structures, the effect of changes in competition to CEOs' pay is uncertain. Therefore, policies aimed at reducing wage inequality should consider market idiosyncrasies as well as taking these different effects into account. Increased competition through, for example, deregulation does, however, have a potential to provide direct incentives for managers to perform well. This may help reduce inefficiencies associated with poor management." This paper addresses whether personal characteristics and resources of the microbusiness owner or the local external economic environment are drivers of job creation. In the UK context of significant growth in self-employment but a declining proportion who create jobs, an investigation using longitudinal data is provided. Individual demographic and resource characteristics are found to be more important, but place effects are relatively weak. Entrepreneurship policy needs to target particular groups, including women and less experienced business owners in their localities." Changes in the production models, economic downturn and increasing digitalisation have triggered a breakdown in the terms and assumptions that previously defined and shaped the notion of employment. This has made it more difficult to discuss, and problematise, issues like vulnerability in employment in such terms as unfairness, inequality and inadequate protection. Taking the 'deconstruction of employment' as a central idea for theorising the phenomenon of work today, this volume explores the emergence of new semantic fields and territories for understanding and regulating employment. These new linguistic categories have implications beyond language alone: they reformulate the very concept of waged employment (including those aspects previously considered intrinsic to the meaning of work and of being 'a worker'), along with other closely associated categories such as unemployment, self-employment, and inactivity."
