Based on a comprehensive data set of all full-time employees in Germany, we explain the profound variation of the gender pay gap at a small-scale level with theory-based individual and job-related characteristics. Using the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, we find pronounced spatial differences in the impact of the considered determinants. Whereas gender differences in job-related characteristics are important drivers in regions with a high gender pay gap, individual characteristics come into effect in regions with a low and negative gap. The results underscore the role played by the establishment composition in a region and the kind of jobs provided for gendered earnings." Firms with 500, 250, and 150 employees were subject to this requirement at later years. We estimate the impact of the law on men's wages, women's wages, and the gender pay gap using administrative data. The results from a regression discontinuity design suggest that the wage transparency law did not change wages or the gender wage gap. In larger firms, the wage of newly hired women increased more due to the reform than of newly hired men, suggesting that the gender wage gap decreased among newly hired workers. Our estimates of the effect of the law on employment growth or turnover are small, and statistically insignificant. For larger firms, we estimate that the transparency law led to a lower share of women in treated firms. These results are robust to several additional specifications." High levels of employment in Germany and Sweden are in contrast with low levels of employment, particularly for women, in Italy and Poland. Career interruptions of women in Italy mean early withdrawal from the labor market, while in Sweden women choose part-time employment. Lower employment rates and gender pay gaps are important causes of differences in expected pension levels. The pension system design and demographics are also different. Prolonging working lives and reducing gender gaps in employment and pay, particularly for those at risk of interrupted careers, is key to ensure decent old-age pensions" (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en)) %K Lebenslauf %K Berufsverlauf %K Auswirkungen %K Rentenanspruch %K Frauen %K internationaler Vergleich %K Erwerbsunterbrechung %K Mütter %K geschlechtsspezifische Faktoren %K Rentenunterschied %K Teilzeitarbeit %K Berufsausstieg %K Lohnunterschied %K Rentenversicherung %K institutionelle Faktoren %K Bundesrepublik Deutschland %K Polen %K Italien %K Schweden %K H55 %K J26 %K J22 %K J16 %K J13 %Z Typ: 4. Next, we document a strong linear association between gender wage gap and the estimated motherhood employment penalty both across countries and within countries. Reductions in the gender wage gap are associated with decreases in motherhood employment penalty. Our estimates suggest that a reduction of one percentage-point in the gender wage gap is associated with a decrease of 0.4 percentage-points in the estimated motherhood employment penalty. Our finding supports the notion that job prospects and gender equality in the labor market play a direct role in a mother's labor supply response to childbirth." Using an event-study design, we show that the policy had no discernible effects on male and female wages, thus leaving the gender wage gap unchanged. The effects are precisely estimated and we rule out that the policy narrowed the gender wage gap by more than 0.5 p.p.. Moreover, we do not find evidence for wage compression within firms. The Austrian transparency reform might have little 'bite' because wage reports are company secret and not public information." We currently lack quantitative indicators capable of capturing the variations on and changes in the individual dimensions of gender equality. This paper seeks to assess the long-run evolution of gender roles and relations in Sweden. To this end, we build a database with quantitative indicators of gender equality. These indicators allow us to construct a Historical Gender Gap Index (HGGI), which isused to describe and analyze the evolution of gender equality in Sweden during a phase characterized by industrialization, urbanization and demographic transition. We find that after a period of stagnation, Sweden from the 1940s onwards made significant progress in closing the gender gap to reach the high level of gender equality that it is now famous for. All counties have made substantial improvements in closing the gap over time, although some counties have been quicker than others. Our investigation reveals the existence of a convergence pattern between counties." Even though opportunities are increasingly made available for women in society, they are still at a great disadvantage. Years of thorough research have revealed how providing increased job opportunities in the labor market is vital for developing a republic's economy. Of course, a country with very little participation of the female population in the labor market will have nothing but a stunted economic and social situation seeing that only half the population are actively contributing to its growth. In the light of the knowledge boom in this modern age, policies have to be made, and strategies are drawn to promote gender equality and provide as many opportunities for women as men in the labor market. This book focuses on the global labor market and how the present and future improvements of gender equality reflect upon it. It also contains the strategies and policies created to combat gender discrimination in the labor market to provide equal opportunities to everybody irrespective of the gender or ethnic affiliations."
