We point out a possible model misspecification due to ignoring the presence of cross-section dependence. Using a panel of 15 EU countries in the 1985-2017 period we show that there is strong evidence for the presence of cross-section dependence. Therefore, we use so-called second-generation procedures (which are robust to cross-section dependence) and find no evidence that trade liberalization and income inequality share a long-run cointegrating relationship in the European Union." While some governments sought national solutions and responded by tightening controls and rights for asylum seekers and refugees, others advocated for European burden sharing and a more humanistic response. This study investigates the extent to which asylum seekers respond to policy changes and prioritise between different policies. Further, than existing studies, we develop a theoretical framework for improving the understanding of what asylum seekers prioritise. Additionally, we also contribute empirically by using recent asylum application data for the EU15 countries (UNHCR data from 2008 to 2015) to disentangle the influence of single policy elements rather than focussing on asylum regimes or composite indexes as has been the case in previous research. Our results indicate that asylum seekers prioritise their short- to medium-term security by choosing destination countries with the most liberal refugee recognition and family reunification policies. In contrast, the level of social assistance accessible to refugees and the easiness of obtaining permanent resident status are unimportant." Differences are explored in a multi-level framework based on European Values Study data from 2017, covering 22 European countries. The empirical results show that members are more pro-environmentally inclined than non-members. This is demonstrated to be attributable to a large extent to the fact that members tend to be more left-leaning politically, a disposition which tends to be associated positively with environmental concern. While those employed in transport and manufacturing generally are least likely to be willing to prioritize environmental protection, membership has the most pronounced positive effect in this group. The tendency for members to be more pro-environmentally inclined is consistent across the studied countries. The article also shows that both members and non-members in countries with higher collective bargaining coverage tend to be more pro-environmentally inclined. Implications of the findings are discussed in terms of the political nature of collective interest representation with which unions are concerned, broader debates about union renewal and the importance of unions in garnering workers' support for a greener economy." Against this background, it explores the complex web of synergies and trade-offs between the three transitions, examines the disjointed manner in which EU social policy has so far developed, and demonstrates the controversial stance of the EU's overarching strategic framework – the European Green Deal – on the issue of a socially just transition. This makes it the largest movement of displaced people in Europe since World War II, exceeding the numbers of the 2015/16 'migrant crisis' by a factor of three. The large and rapid influx of Ukrainian refugees thus poses another political and humanitarian challenge for Europe. In order to prevent overloading of the EU's external borders and national asylum systems, the EU has activated the Temporary Protection Directive on 4 March 2022 for the first time. In contrast to refugees in 2015/16, Ukrainian citizens are thus entitled to visa-free travel within the EU and can apply for temporary protection in a country of their choice. This protection is initially valid for one year and includes access to social benefits, education, and the labor market (European Commission 2022a). Thus, there is no official allocation of refugees within the EU planned at this time. Instead, Ukraine's social connectedness with the EU is expected to play a crucial role for the refugees' choice of destination. In a survey of 1,900 Ukrainian refugees in Germany, the majority of respondents were accommodated privately, with 43 percent saying they were staying with friends or relatives. Additionally, the main reason given for choosing their destination was having friends or relatives living in that place (German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community 2022). More generally, the fact that social networks at the intended destination influence migration decisions, since these connections help with finding accommodation and jobs or can provide financial support, is also documented in the empirical migration literature. For example, using a global sample, Bertoli and Ruyssen (2018) found that existing social connections are an important factor in the choice between otherwise similar migration destinations. Furthermore, social networks of co-nationals are found to foster the refugees' economic integration by positively impacting their labor market outcomes (Damm 2009; Martén et al. 2019). So far, most Ukrainian refugees have sought shelter in Ukraine's neighboring countries, with Poland taking in by far the largest number of refugees (3.6 million as of 29 May 2022, UNHCR 2022). However, it can be expected that some Ukrainians will move on to Western Europe (Brücker et al. 2022a). Given the prominent role of existing social connections, identifying the countries and regions that are most connected to Ukraine helps to determine where a disproportionate number of refugees may be expected. For this purpose, we rely on the Facebook Social Connectedness Index (SCI) by Bailey et al. (2018), as it constitutes a suitable measure for the social connectedness between regions based on Facebook friendship links." Our identification strategy relies on the five national reforms that took place over this period and on initial differences across sectors in the share of workers exposed to the reforms. To that end, we estimate a collective model using the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions for the period 2004-2019, and we study the validity of several potential distribution factors; that is to say, variables that impact labor supply only through intrahousehold bargaining power. Results show some degree of heterogeneity in the responses of labor supply to intrahousehold bargaining power. Spouses' education and the age gap operate as distribution factors in central European countries, such as Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. On the other hand, in the Mediterranean South countries, the share of unearned income of the wife operates as a distribution factor in Italy, Portugal, and Spain, and in countries of Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, and Lithuania), the sex ratio, wives' non-labor income share, spouses' age and education gap, and the fertility rate all operate as distribution factors. In northern economies, such as Denmark and Estonia, we find evidence for share of unearned income, age gap, and fertility rate, while in islands, such as Ireland and the United Kingdom, the sex ratio, the share of unearned income, the age and education gap, and the fertility rate are suitable bargaining power variables. The results are consistent with theoretical sharing rules, and distribution factors that empower a given spouse are mainly positively correlated with increases in the share of income they attract from intrahousehold bargaining." This paper asks how the burden of childcare affects the labor market integration of immigrants. To identify the contribution of this burden to the native-immigrant employment gap, it exploits European Labor Force Survey (EU-LFS) microdata from 2004 to 2019. This survey collects information on respondents' counterfactual behaviour, in the event that: a) they had no care responsibilities; b) they could find a job compatible with their care responsibilities; c) they had access to childcare services. This information allows estimates to be obtained of the impact of childcare on labor supply comparable across eleven countries. Our results show that the burden of childcare is the major obstacle to the integration of immigrant mothers. While the employment gap between non-EU immigrant and native mothers in Northern and Southern Europe is 35 and 17 percentage points (pp) respectively, two-thirds (24 pp and 12 pp) of it is explained by childcare motivated inactivity. We reject the hypothesis that the childcare gap is solely driven by immigrants' sociodemographic traits or traditional parenting norms. Our estimates suggest that at least a quarter (5.8 pp and 2.6 pp) of the gap is due to the higher opportunity cost of paid work faced by immigrant mothers; that equal access to childcare could reduce it by 10 pp and 7 pp; and that immigrants' exclusion from flexible time arrangements could explain the larger size and higher persistence of the gap in the North. The health crisis worldwide and the precautions against Covid-19 rapidly induced a demand and supply recession simultaneously. The Covid-19 crisis was marked as the worst crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It hit the EMU in an unfortunate moment, when economic growth was already low before the Covid-19 crisis started. The effects of the Great Financial Crisis and Great Recession 2008/2009 were not overcome at the beginning of the Covid-19 recession. Mega-expansionary monetary policy was still in place stimulating bubbles in stock and real estate markets in an overall constellation of partly very high levels of private and public debt. Macroeconomic policies in form of expansionary monetary policy, large-scale fiscal stimuli, and public guarantees, in Germany and the EMU smoothed the disastrous economic and social effects of the pandemic. Overall, the stabilisation policy during the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany was successful and prevented escalating inequalities. But the pandemic intensified long-lasting problems which have to be solved in the future. Public debt quotas cannot increase permanently without leading to an economically fragile situation. It also shows the need for a fiscal union in the EMU as an equal partner for the European Central Bank (ECB). In early 2022, the ECB is in a difficult situation. Price shocks drove the inflation rate up, but restrictive monetary policy as a response to such shocks slowdown growth and lead to unemployment." On average, fiscal measures supported the output recovery without generating significant inflationary pressures. This finding masks substantial heterogeneity: Assistance to small and medium enterprises and specific sectors contributed significantly to stimulating the economy and to maintaining inflation. Direct pandemic spending and unemployment benefits and measures to sustain employment levels generated sizeable output multipliers and had no inflationary costs. Conversely, universal help only had positive effects on inflation and transfers to households did not do much apart from affecting confidence." The indicator accounts for shifts in employment towards greener and more productive sectors over the 2008-2018 period. The mapping of the indicators shows considerable regional heterogeneity in terms of both competitiveness and environmental sustainability, as well as interesting dynamics over time. We present an econometric analysis of the determinants of these sectoral shifts. It appears that the European Structural Funds are positively associated with the transition towards a more competitive and sustainable economy at the regional level. This is particularly true for the competitive dimension of the transition, with the Funds being positively associated with regional employment restructuring towards more productive sectors within each country." The analysis is broken down to examine the influence on different types of labour, including the dimensions of gender, age, and educational attainment. Intangible assets show a positive relation with respect to labour demand growth." We focus on jobs (defined as specific occupations within specific sectors) as our unit of analysis. We rank all jobs based on their average educational level and divide these distributions into terciles. We accommodate the approach to compare regions to their national average and see how they evolve compared to the national trend. Our aim is to determine if regional employment structures converge over time and whether they are polarising, upgrading or downgrading. Several hypotheses regarding possible underlying factors of structural changes are further discussed. Results show a high degree of heterogeneity in the different regions. This presents considerable challenges for policymakers, as they need to gear their efforts at regional, more localised level."
