(...) Our main aim in this comparative study is to understand how social relationships and networks in migrant-origin villages can contribute positively or negatively to supporting local entrepreneurship and socio-economic equality. Consequently, we investigate the role of personal relationships and social networks in facilitating the ability of return migrants to become entrepreneurs, and to start or join cooperatives. We also explore the role of personal relationships and social networks in mediating the socio-economic consequences of migrant enterprises or cooperatives in migrant-origin villages. We compare and contrast how residents participated and perceived the effects of statesponsored programmes to encourage return migrant entrepreneurship, as well as individually initiated return migrant enterprises. By analyzing the role of social relationships and networks in migration-driven development programmes in migrant-origin villages, one aim of this article is to highlight the often suggested but under-researched social and economic 'side-effects' of such programmes in Indonesia."
