In this article, potential explanations for this relationship are examined separately for three age groups (18 - 35, 36 - 50, and 51 - 65). Mediation analyses based on the German Socio-economic Panel show an 'immediate shock effect' that occurs when a person becomes worried, as well as a 'prolonged stress effect' that sets in when job loss worries persist over a longer period. Second, the results reveal that for middle-aged workers, both effects of self-perceived job insecurity are largely explained by the following factors: perceived financial problems, feelings of stress, exhaustion, and anxiety, a perceived lack of control, and family dissatisfaction. Yet it appears that these factors do not fully explain the detrimental health effects of job insecurity among younger or older workers." To this end, we construct an unemployment sentiment indicator and extract news about several economic variables. By means of genetic programming we estimate symbolic regressions that link unemployment rates in the Euro Area to qualitative expectations about a wide range of economic variables. We then use the evolved expressions to compute unemployment expectations for each consumer group. We first assess the out-of-sample forecast accuracy of the evolved indicators, obtaining better forecasts for the leading unemployment sentiment indicator than for the coincident one. Results are similar across the different socio-demographic groups. The best forecast results are obtained for respondents between 30 and 49 years. The group where we observe the bigger differences among categories is the occupation, where the lowest forecast errors are obtained for the unemployed respondents. Next, we link news about inflation, industrial production, and stock markets to unemployment expectations. With this aim we match positive and negative news with consumers' unemployment sentiment using a distributed lag regression model for each news item. We find asymmetries in the responses of consumers' unemployment expectations to economic news: they tend to be stronger in the case of negative news, especially in the case of inflation." Because of t = a + c, the design is degenerate and one is automatically confronted with the associated (linear) identification problem studied intensively for parametric models (Mason and Fienberg 1985; MaCurdy and Mroz 1995; Kuang, Nielsen and Nielsen 2008a,b). Nonlinear time, age, and cohort effects can be identified in an additive model. The present study seeks to solve the identification problem employing a nonparametric estimation approach: We develop an additive model which is solved using a backfitting algorithm, in the spirit of Mammen et al. (1999). Our approach has the advantage that we do not have to worry about the parametric specification and its impact on the identification problem. The results can easily be interpreted, as the smooth backfitting algorithm is a projection of the data onto the space of additive models. We develop a complete asymptotic distribution theory for nonparametric estimators based on kernel smoothing and apply the method to a study on wage inequality in Germany between 1975 and 2004." Using data from international top-level women's soccer, we provide evidence that male coaches show a lower level of risk-taking than female coaches on average. We also find a U-shaped age effect that is independent of gender, meaning that young and more mature individuals tend to take riskier decisions. Our main results therefore strongly contrast with the majority of previous studies on gender differences in risk preferences, and thereby emphasize the importance of considering the industrial environment. Underlying selection processes may play an important role. We find no correlation between the gender gap in risk-taking and female empowerment defined by national gender equality scores."
