Results of a study among Dutch taxi drivers provided mixed support for the hypotheses. Negative meta-stereotypes, but not negative age stereotypes, were associated with fewer perceived opportunities until retirement and, in turn, a stronger intention to retire. Self-categorization moderated the relationships between negative age (meta-)stereotypes and occupational future time perspective. However, contrary to expectations, the relations were stronger among workers with a low self-categorization as an older person in comparison with workers with a high self-categorization in this regard. Overall, results highlight the importance of psychosocial processes in the study of retirement intentions and their antecedents." We provide a framework for identification of such equilibrium effects and implement it using the Regional Extension Benefit Program (REBP) in Austria which extended the duration of UI benefits for a large group of eligible workers in selected regions of Austria. We show that non-eligible workers in REBP regions have higher job finding rates, lower unemployment durations, and a lower risk of long-term unemployment. We discuss the implications of our results for optimal UI policy." We aimed to explore possible associations between retirement intentions and behaviour, using five-year high-quality quantitative panel data on Norwegian senior workers. Retirement intentions operate at different levels of firmness: (a) considerations; (b) preferences; and (c) decisions. Compared to work continuation considerations, a targeted age for retirement improved predictive power whether the target was preferred or decided, and particularly so if the target (i.e. the preferred or decided age of retirement), corresponded with a normative retirement age. Because more workers are able to state a preferred age of retiring than a decision about when to retire, preferences may be better proxies for retirement behaviour than decisions, when the issue is planning for policies. The correspondence between intentions and behaviour varies primarily by health, education and type of work. Older workers with poor health, and workers with low education, often retire earlier than they prefer. Blue-collar workers often retire earlier than they had decided. These findings illustrate the possible effect of labour market resources, not only for senior workers' labour market participation, but also for their opportunities to work up to the age they prefer or had decided. Even for white-collar workers and those in good health, constraints seem to apply when they wish to retire late." It investigates retirees' preferred and actual ages of retirement, focusing on the retirement window 1995 - 2011. Moreover, it reports on the prevalence of mismatch in the form of involuntary retirement (retiring earlier than preferred) and involuntary work (retiring later than preferred). The study identifies substantial shares of retirees who are affected by a mismatch between their preferred and actual ages of retirement. In the majority of the countries analysed, at least 30 per cent of retirees would have preferred to continue working past the age at which they retired, while in a number of countries sizeable shares of retirees report involuntary work. The risk factors for involuntary retirement include the experience of late-career job loss, unemployment, job exits for health reasons and, in the case of women, working in higher-status occupations. The risk factors for involuntary work include fatherhood and, in the case of women, part-time work. As a result of rising actual ages of retirement, the risk of involuntary retirement has decreased for more recent retirement cohorts, while due to pension reforms that have tightened eligibility rules for early retirement, men's risk of involuntary work has increased. However, involuntary retirement is still more prevalent than involuntary work." On die basis of a life course perspective, we examine die interplay of characteristics related to the individual's previous employment history and features of social policy on the country level. Our central assumption is that the effects of institutions and regulations vary according to the individual's previous labor market history. Biography data for men aged 50 and older come from the third wave of the 'Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe' (SHARELIFE). Regarding the social policy characteristics, we focus on the strictness of employment protection legislation (EPL) and institutionalized incentives for early retirement. We use multilevel regression techniques to estimate cross-level interaction effects between the individual employment history and the social policy indicators. Our results show divergent mechanisms for the risks of unemployment and early retirement. While the former is mainly determined by individual characteristics and results from a process of cumulative disadvantage over the life course, we find clean social policy effects for the latter. Especially individuals with previously stable careers in standard employment and long tenure are likely to retire early. This effect appears to be the stronger, the more generous early retirement regulations are in a country. Consequently, while early retirement possibilities do not mitigate the unemployment risk of those with previously atypical careers in non-standard employment, they benefit individuals in good career positions. Strict employment protection legislation, on the contrary, alleviates die high early retirement risk of the latter group, however, only if not counteracted by generous early retirement incentives." Since the early 1990s these regulations are characterized by de-flexibilization which limits individual retirement options. Against this background, the article raises the question of how formerly or currently employed in certain professions deal with institutional transitions into retirement, how they evaluate these transitions and to what extent these are embedded into their living conditions. Using qualitative data, the paper presents the individual ways of utilization as well as institutional options and limitations in regard to transition into retirement. The analysis indicates that dichotomous explanatory modeln are not adequate in order to describe transitions into retirement. This also applies to the life expectancy of pensioners, which means that individuals are claiming pensions for longer, although pension funds are not receiving any extra payment on the revenue side. Capital-funded, private pension funds compensate for this effect with lower pension payments or higher contributions; while this phenomenon has been largely ignored by statutory pension schemes to date. In the view of Eckhart Bomsdorf, University of Cologne, rising life expectancy cannot merely be reflected in people claiming pensions for longer, but should also impact their working lives. The statutory retirement age for a state pension, which is also referred to as the legal retirement age, should be adjusted in the long term. It could be lastingly linked to developments in life expectancy; which would result in the retirement age rising to 69 or 70 in the long-term. This should be preceded in the short to mid-term by greater flexibility in the actual retirement age and an adjustment of the additional income ceiling." To establish the relevance of the labor demand component in retirement decisions, we consider a trade liberalization between Switzerland and the EU - the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA). A vast literature suggests that these trade liberalizations induce firms to relocations and to restructure, with large compositional effects on the labor market particularly for the elderly workers, who face higher mobility costs. Using Swiss Labor Force Survey data, we use a difference in differences approach to compare early retirement behavior in three periods (pre-liberalization, announcement, and implementation) for three groups of industries. MRA industries represent our treatment group; control groups are non-MRA manufacturing industries, and services. Our empirical results show that elderly workers are more likely to retire early in the MRA sector during the announcement period, and that the employment of young (30-years old) male workers increases. The distribution of wages by age is instead unaffected. Additional empirical evidence using Swiss Business Census and UN Comtrade data suggests that the increase in early retirement in MRA is not explained by more firms' exits, nor by more early retirement among the exiting firms. It is rather the surviving MRA firms, which react to the increase in competition by adjusting their labor force and use more early retirement."
