Abstract= {"This paper uses the approach in the under/over education literature to analyze the extent of matching of educational level to occupational attainment among adult native born and foreign born men in the US, using the 2000 Census. Overeducation is found to be more common among recent labor market entrants, while undereducation is more likely among older workers. Among immigrants, greater pre-immigration labor market experience is associated with poorer job matches, presumably due to the less-than-perfect international transferability of foreign experience. A longer duration in the US, however, is associated with a lower probability of being overeducated and a greater probability of being undereducated. This is consistent with immigrants being favorably selected for occupational advancement but this effect becomes realized only after overcoming the disadvantages of the less-than-perfect international transferability of their pre-immigration skills." Abstract= {"Although studies of student employment ('earning while learning') mostly find positive wage effects, they do not adequately consider the relation of the employment to the field of study. We investigate how different types of student employment during tertiary education affect short- and long-term labour market returns. Beyond examining differences between non-working and part-time working students, we distinguish between student employment related and unrelated to the field of study. Our results show significant positive labour market returns of 'earning while learning' only for student employment related to the field of study. Abstract= {"Up to now the German labour market has resisted the economic slump in the wake of the global financial crisis, as well as the distortions caused by the Euro crisis. In contrast to other European countries, the trend here is for unemployment to decline while employment is growing. What are the causes? What role did the labour market reforms and the crisis management after the Lehman Crash play? And to what extent is the job boom due to an expansion in atypical employment relationships?
The 'Handbuch Arbeitsmarkt 2013' (Labour Market Handbook 2013) offers a comprehensive stocktaking of the German labour market. It sketches developments since 2006, analyses short- and long-term perspectives, and summarizes political decisions relevant to the labour market from the aspect of time and in detail. This issue deals in depth with two current and central topics:
- Transitions into employment and their significance for the quality of work, and
- the results of the recent economic upturn as well as the future decline in labour supply for skilled labour requirements.
