%X "The birth of a child often reinforces an unequal division of employment and care work among heterosexual couples. Parental leave programmes that foster long leaves tend to increase this inequality within couples. However, by investigating a particularly long parental leave system, we show that specific practices enable parents to share care work equally. Our ethnographic study includes interviews with heterosexual couples, observations in prenatal classes and information material available to parents. Specific sets of practices - managing economic security, negotiating employment, sharing information with peers and feeding practices - involved parents who shared care work equally and parents who divided care work unequally. Contingent on specific situated practices, the arrangement of care work shifted in an equal or unequal direction. Even within long parental leaves, equality between parents was facilitated when economic security was provided through means other than income, when work hours were flexible, mothers had a close relationship to work, information on sharing equally was available and children were bottle-fed. Consequently, an equal share of care work is not the effect of solely structural, individual, cultural or normative matters, but of their entanglement in practices." %X "Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to test hypotheses regarding the importance of employee preferences in explaining sticky floors, the pattern that women are, compared to men, less likely to start to climb the job ladder.
Design/methodology/approach: The authors use original data obtained using a survey and a vignette study in which participants had to score the likeliness with which they would accept job offers with different promotion characteristics.
Findings: The main findings are that young female professionals have a less pronounced preference for more demanding and less routinary jobs and that this effect is mediated by the greater risk aversion and anticipated gender discrimination among women. No gender differences were found in the relative likeliness to apply for jobs that involve a promotion in terms of job authority.
Research limitations/implications: The vignette method assumes that artificial settings with low stakes do not bias results. Another limitation follows from the focus on inter-organizational promotions among young professionals, which raises the question to what extent the results can be generalized to broader settings.
Originality/value: This paper contributes to the literature on gender differences in careers by measuring the impact of employee preferences on gender differences in career decisions." (Author's abstract, © Emerald Group) ((en))

%X "Relative to defined benefit (DB) plans, defined contribution (DC) plans have been linked to greater employee mobility. Because employees with different underlying mobility tendencies may sort across plans or firms, the relationship between plan type and mobility may be due to selection. We identify the role of selection by exploiting a natural experiment at an employer, in which the transition from a DB to a DC pension plan was affected by default rules. Using the default assignment as a source of exogenous variation in plan enrollment, we find that employees with higher mobility tendencies self-select into the DC plan." %X "Drawing on 48 interviews with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) doctoral students at a private research university in the United States (US), we examine how students make sense of the preponderance of men at the faculty level despite increasing gender parity among students. Students' primary explanatory frame, historical bias, suggests that the gender gap will disappear when enough women attain their doctorates (PhDs). Competing frames include innate and constructed gender difference and the perceived incompatibility between a woman's body clock and an academic tenure clock. We argue that the frames that students use to explain the gender gap shed light on the cultural context of STEM, which is characterized by a tension between the belief in a meritocratic system and the acknowledgement of structural inequality. We suggest that men and women's preference for explanations that preclude bias, in light of women students' own experiences with sexism in graduate school, contributes to the reproduction of inequality by rendering invisible structural barriers to gender equality." %X "Law continues to be an attractive career path for women. Yet evidence shows that women's careers in law stagnate with proportionally small numbers of women progressing up the hierarchy from law graduate to partner. In this study we investigated how gendering and class processes impact on women's career progression. A major contribution is that we explored the heterogeneous views held by women below and above the partnership line, in Auckland's top law firms. Drawing on Acker's gendering processes (1990, 2006a) plus the accumulation of appropriate capitals needed to progress, we analysed 52 interview accounts. The women lawyers themselves were divided on how gendering and class processes impact on their career progression. Women partners accepted the hierarchical employment model of law and were confident in their role and place. Women below the partner line, while frustrated by the personal and professional requirements for success, did not demonstrate agency for change. In concluding, we reflect on the potential for change in the profession." (Author's abstract, Published by arrangement with John Wiley & Sons) ((en))

%X "Although there have been many studies of low skilled call centre operators, research on professional workers in call centres is less common and cross-national research on such operations even rarer. This article compares the labour process experiences of tele-nurses - registered nurses in call centre settings - across three countries: the UK, Australia and Sweden. Using cross-national, comparative ethnographies, through a system, society and dominance (SSD) approach, the article explores the common problems tele-nurses face as well as distinctive societal differences in the ways in which this branch of e-health care is being established. The outcomes reveal both societal diversity and mounting pressures towards a globalizing conformity between the three countries with regard to the working practices of tele-nursing. The findings have important implications for whether or not a professional project can be developed around tele-health care." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "In tune with the fundamental shift in Germany's skill-b(i)ased immigration policy since 2005, higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly becoming 'magnets' for a skilled migrant workforce. While 'internationalisation' is often understood as something to be celebrated and (further) accomplished, some observers speak of clear signs of discriminatory experiences among racialised and migrant academics. This is a new aspect, as social inequalities have by and large been considered in migration studies to be the sole terrain of labour mobility into less-skilled sectors of the economy. Meanwhile, abundant literature on gender and higher education shows that women academics have poorer access to career progression than men, demonstrating gender-based academic career inequalities. However, the insights generated in these two strands of scholarship have seldom been in conversation with one another. This paper takes stock of the lack of an intersectional perspective, focusing on citizenship and gender within HEIs as hiring meso-level organisations that are becoming increasingly transnationalised. It explores the intersectionality of citizenship and gender in accessing academic career advancement by examining three key career stages, that is, doctoral researchers, postdoctoral researchers, and professors, in two case-study HEIs." %X "This paper develops a conceptual framework to enhance our understanding of the career challenges facing older workers in a global economy. A distinction between 'high' and 'low' career capital of older workers is made. This distinction is then used to highlight potential temporal and spatial challenges for older workers in their later life careers. We draw on empirical evidence from existing studies of older workers and their careers. The contribution of this paper to human resource management debates is threefold. Firstly, we contribute to debates in the HRM(Human Resource Management) literature about intelligent careers and career capital by distinguishing between high and low career capital to explain the polarisation of older workers' careers. Secondly, we synthesise career capital issues with spatial and temporal aspects of international labour markets to conceptualise the key issues and challenges which create potential boundaries for older workers when navigating later life careers thereby contributing to 'boundary-focused scholarship' (Inkson, K., Gunz, H., Ganesh, S., & Roper, J. (2012). Boundaryless careers; Bringing back boundaries, Organization Studies, 33, 323 - 340). Finally, we develop a series of propositions to provide a basis for further research into the issues of space and time relevant to older 'high' and 'low' career capital workers, their careers and HRM." %X "Since the 1970s, projects have become a widespread form of work and labour organisation. They represent complex temporary endeavours and suggest spontaneity and flexibility, albeit reliant on bureaucratic structures. In contrast to this, projects can also be seen as metaphors for late modern biographies and socialisation. Both notions directly affect knowledge work by domesticating knowledge and creativity to fit valorisation processes. Within obscured power relations, a subjectivising antinomy of predictability and flexibility arises: the projectified self. This form of subjectivity domesticates the knowledge worker contributing to new vulnerabilities to precarity due to flexible, spontaneous and uncertain biographies." %X "The growing diffusion of business travels in the world of work, beyond the genuinely 'mobile professions,' is a symptom of growing mobility requirements. Stress through business travels is usually discussed in terms of compatibility of work and family life or as mental and physical strain produced by the very activity of traveling. On the basis of a qualitative study, the paper discusses mobility experience, strains and coping strategies on different levels of space and time, relating it to result-oriented forms of performance control in enterprises. The results show that business travellers not only have to cope with problems of work-life compatibility but also with a trade-off within work: between mobility requirements and the tasks at the regular place of work. In this context, they tend to use private time as a kind of reservoir for coping strategies and the blurring of boundaries as a resource to cope with work-related conflicts." (Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)
%X "After long years of fierce debate on the reform of academic career paths in Germany this article sums up the current state of academic careers in the country. The author compares and contrasts career paths and orientations in scientific institutions with those in business corporations. The study reveals that a differentiation of career paths is underway in the corporate sector, albeit tentatively, whereas the academic sector focuses more than ever on only one goal, namely obtaining a professorship. This difference in career paths is also reflected in the career orientations of the employees. In companies the author identifies three different types of orientations that can be interpreted as reactions to very different features of the structural changes in the business world. In academia, which is characterised by intense competition among a constantly growing number of academics for an almost stagnant number of permanent posts, three orientations can also be identified. However, they differ from the responses of their peers in business because they are based on subjective perceptions of the likelihood of career success under these conditions." %X "This conceptual, interdisciplinary paper will start with an introduction to the new, networked, knowledge-driven, global economy. The objective of this paper, using a narrative review of the economic, business, and management literature of labor markets and human capital, will be to negate the notion that we have, at present, one labor market for human capital, and will conjecture that we currently have (or are about to have) three autonomous markets for labor that are driven by different market dynamics and mechanisms. The three markets are identified as follows: routine labor, skilled labor, and talent. Each one of the markets will then be discussed, including future trends, issues, and remedies. This trifurcation of the labor markets is mostly the combined result of phase transition resulting from three major impetuses. The first is the effect(s) that technological revolutions have on the supply and demand of/for multidimensional skills of human capital. Second is the 'winner take all' market structure enabled by the 'industrial' economy's framed legislation and social norms. The third impetus is the context (for the technological revolutions and the nature of the markets) of a networked global economy that is driven by knowledge developing at an accelerated pace. The narrative multidisciplinary literature review used was a modified version of the integrative literature review. The review confirmed that the three labor markets' dynamics are to a considerable degree dissimilar and that legislating, conducting monetary, and fiscal policies that treat them as one labor market could (and probably already does) cause more harm than good, resulting in destabilizing the labor markets (as indicated by the growing unemployment rate of the young generation worldwide) and by extension, the social fabric of the new economy (as indicated by the growing economic and educational inequality worldwide). The paper concludes with a framework of the three labor markets, followed by a summary, including the need for a new legal and social paradigm regarding labor and the need for a new formal model for value creation. Finally, the limitations of the study as well as potential research gaps are identified." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "The modern welfare state finds itself in the middle of two major upheavals: the impact of technology and immigration. Having taken in more refugees per capita than most other countries, the pillars of the Swedish welfare state are being shaken, and digital technologies are set to strengthen already existing trends towards job and wage polarization. The development of skills to keep pace with technology will enter into a critical period for the labor market in which inadequate policy responses could result in further inequality and polarization. In this regard, a platform-based labor market could help by opening up a vast range of new work opportunities.
Mårten Blix examines the implications of these trends that drive change in developed economies and, in particular, the impact that they have on Sweden and other European countries with rigid labor markets and comprehensive tax-financed welfare services. Increasing costs from immigration and rising inequality could further reduce the willingness to pay high taxes and erode support for redistribution. Failure to address challenges like this one could herald much more drastic changes further down the road. There are already signs of economic and political tensions and there is a risk that the social contract could crack." (Publisher's text, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "The Nordic model attracts attention in a mixture of applause and disbelief. Among its merits, but also a precondition to its future survival, is its capacity to modify and adapt to changing circumstances. This book scrutinizes Nordic - in particular Norwegian - working life and welfare states from the perspective of institutional change. The analyses range from property rights, boardroom politics and wage formation to old-age pensions, care work and childcare policies. What emerges is a picture of societies characterized by ongoing, often incremental, social and political reform processes. Tripartite relations of coordination and negotiation in the labor market and beyond, give shape to power relations and political processes in particular ways. The close connections between labour market, welfare state, family and gender policies work to create institutional bundles - in an even stronger way than assumed in the Varieties of Capitalism literature." %X This thematic review performs an analysis of the impact of recent reforms on inequality in Europe and was prepared by a network of external experts - the European Centre of Expertise (ECE) in the field of labour law, employment and labour market policy.
The review consists of 27 country-specific articles dedicated all EU countries covered by the European Semester process (all EU Member States except from Greece) and a synthesis report.
The experts were asked to select a limited number of reforms to report on, prioritising them in terms of their impact on inequalities and not to present an exhaustive discussion of reforms in 2015 and 2016. This review and the country reports therefore do not seek to provide a comprehensive picture of all relevant reforms implemented in recent years. A particular attention is given to reforms triggered by country-specific recommendations. If certain systems/policies had already been reformed prior to 2015, such reforms are not included in the scope of this review.
