Abstract= {"Digital nomadism, a mobile lifestyle that encompasses a wide array of professional endeavours, ranging from corporate remote workers to digital entrepreneurs, has benefitted from a steadily growing appeal. Despite this, there is a dearth of research exploring the premises and development of digital nomadism. This paper is concerned with the image of digital nomadism, its underlying structure and practices, and its relation to the current world of work. In order to explore these aspects and problematise digital nomadism, the paper traces the development of digital nomadism and takes inspiration from the Deleuzo-Guattarian image of the nomad. Adopting a qualitative approach to content analysis, this paper argues that digital nomadism is becoming increasingly institutionalised and professionalised, and, as such, is distant from the emancipatory dimension underlying its discourse and many of its cultural representations. Overall, digital nomadism appears as an extension of capitalist logics, rather than an alternative to them." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))},

Abstract= {"This article investigates the role of labor market institutions for social inequalities in employment. To distinguish institutional impacts for men and women, age groups and educational levels the analysis draws on data from 21 countries using the European Union Labor Force Survey and the Current Population Survey 1992-2012. The analysis demonstrates that there is significant heterogeneity in the relationship between institutions and employment across social groups. In line with the literature on dualization, institutions that arguably protect labor market insiders, i.e. employment protection, unionization and unemployment benefits, are frequently associated with greater inequality between typically disadvantaged groups and their insider peers. By contrast, institutions that discriminate less between insiders and outsiders, i.e. active labor market policies, minimum income benefits and centralized wage bargaining at times boost social equality on the labor market. The insider/outsider argument provides a valuable heuristic for assessing heterogeneity in institutional impacts, yet in several instances the results deviate from the expectations."(Author's Abstract, IAB-Doku)},

Abstract= {Earnings gaps between black and white workers have widened over the past 30-40 years. This increase is not explained by differences in observed demographics or the industry and occupational composition of employment. We suggest that variation in labor market dynamics between black and white workers are important. Disparities in job switching, job loss, and associated wage growth result in flatter career wage profiles for black workers and widening earnings gaps over the work life. Abstract= {"What determines the earnings of a worker relative to his peers in the same occupation? What makes a worker fail in one occupation but succeed in another? More broadly, what are the factors that determine the productivity of a worker-occupation match? To help answer questions like these, we propose an empirical measure of multidimensional skill mismatch that is based on the discrepancy between the portfolio of skills required by an occupation and the portfolio of abilities possessed by a worker for learning those skills. This measure arises naturally in a dynamic model of occupational choice and human capital accumulation with multidimensional skills and Bayesian learning about one's ability to learn skills. Not only does mismatch depress wage growth in the current occupation, it also leaves a scarring effect'by stunting skill acquisition'that reduces wages in future occupations. Mismatch also predicts different aspects of occupational switching behavior. We construct the empirical analog of our skill mismatch measure from readily available US panel data on individuals and occupations and find empirical support for these implications. The magnitudes of these effects are large: moving from the worst- to the best-matched decile can improve wages by 11 percent per year for the rest of one's career." (Author's Abstract, IAB-Doku)},

Title= {The vocational impact of educational programs on youth labor market integration},
Year= {2019},
Annote= {URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rssm.2019.100437},
Abstract= {Much research is done on the impact of vocational education and training (VET) systems on youth's transition from school to work. However, this research treats vocational education within countries as a homogeneous entity and as if the 'vocational effect' equally applies to the entire VET system, while nuanced insights in the within-country heterogeneity of the vocational impact are remarkably scattered. This study attempts to open this black box by investigating to what extent the vocational specificity of educational programs has a positive impact on having a paid job and experiencing immediate job entry and job matching among recently graduated VET school-leavers in the Netherlands. Additionally, we theorize and test the moderating role of regional youth unemployment rates. Unique to this study are the two vocational measurements of programs, which were obtained by assessments of professionals involved in the programs (e.g. teachers, managers, education coordinators). Using data from the VET survey and VET expert survey - covering 114 educational programs between 2010 and 2014 - our multilevel models generally show a positive vocational impact of programs on youth's labor market opportunities. Unexpectedly, the vocational impact does not vary with regional youth unemployment rates. We reflect on our findings within the context of current school-to-work literature. Abstract= {Recent research has shown that new labour market divides resulting from the rise of non-standard employment (NSE) are reflected in the political preferences of the workers affected. Yet, our knowledge of the stance of political parties on the issue is extremely limited, even descriptively. Do they address NSE in the context of election campaigns'if so, which parties do? How do they frame non-standard work and what policies do they propose? The article tackles these questions by analysing party programmes in four large Continental and Southern Europe states where NSE is widespread and poorly integrated into the systems of social protection. We find that attention to and criticism of non-standard work follows a left'right distribution, but we also find differences within the left: left-libertarian parties address the issue more specifically, while more traditional left-wing parties often link it to other labour concerns. Abstract= {"Although the U.S. case has been studied extensively, the importance of job finding and separation rates to unemployment variability remains unsettled. The aim of this paper is to contribute to this debate by adopting a novel lens, wavelet analysis. We resort to wavelet analysis to unveil time- and frequency-varying features regarding the contribution of the job finding and job separation rates for the U.S. unemployment rate dynamics. Drawing on this approach, we are able to reconcile some apparently contradictory findings reported in previous literature. We find that the job finding rate is more influential for the overall unemployment behaviour but the job separation rate also plays a critical role, especially during recessions. In particular, the job separation rate accounts for, on average, 53 percent of the unemployment variability at short-run fluctuations during recessions, in sharp contrast with an overall contribution of 21 percent over time and across frequencies." Abstract= {"The paper explores the notion of the employability paradox which notes that while organizations investing in the career and competency development of their workforce can benefit from higher performance, they also risk losing more employable staff to competitors. Building on contributions from social exchange theory and signalling theory, we develop a model exploring the circumstances under which investment in career development benefits employees and organizations. We test our model in a longitudinal study following graduates entering the labour market. Our results show that when organizations signal that they care about employees by investing in their career development and individuals are receptive to such signals and proactively seek to manage their careers, investment in career development has a positive impact on organizational commitment and intention to stay with one?s employer. Our findings indicate that the idea of the employability paradox is simplistic and lacks theoretical and empirical support." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))},

Abstract= {"Despite the contraction of many male-dominated occupations, men have made limited progress in entering female-dominated jobs. Using monthly employment histories from the SIPP, we examine whether individual economic conditions'such as a period of unemployment'are associated with men subsequently pursuing female-dominated work. Specifically, we ask whether men are more likely to enter female-dominated jobs after unemployment, compared to men who take a new job directly from employment. We find that unemployment significantly increases the odds of men entering female-dominated work among men who make job transitions. By examining changes in occupational prestige as well as wage differences before and after unemployment, we also find that entering a female-dominated job (compared to other job types) may help men mitigate common scarring effects of unemployment such as wage losses and occupational prestige downgrades. Accordingly, this study reveals a critical occupational route that may allow men to remain upwardly mobile after involuntary unemployment." (Author's Abstract, IAB-Doku)},

Abstract= {Was motiviert nicht-traditionell Studierende zur Teilnahme an wissenschaftlicher Weiterbildung? Abstract= {"We present the first evidence on the consequences of the new statutory minimum wage in Germany. Using the IAB Establishment Panel, we identify employment effects from variation in the establishment-level bite of the minimum wage. A difference-in-differences estimation reveals an increase in average wages between 3.8 and 6.3 percent and an employment loss by approximately 1.7 percent in treated establishments. These estimates imply a labor demand elasticity with respect to wages ranging between 0.2 and 0.4. We also observe a transitory reduction of the contracted working hours in the first year after the introduction and that the employment effect seems mostly driven by a reduction in hires rather than by an increase in layoffs."
