(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku, © De Gruyter)
%X "Cooperatives have recently experienced a renaissance in their empirical appearance and as an object of research. This paper explores cooperatives by and for solo self-employed as new labor market organizations. The aim is to understand how cooperatives organize mobility and what organizational dynamics are associated with the cooperative form of organization. A comparison of two cases from IT and medicine shows that cooperatives can be specified by the central organizational characteristics of goal, membership and structure. Moreover, their role in the labor market is discussed. Cooperatives with the goal of a solidarity-based organization of mobility of solo self-employed can be seen as hybrids between interest representation and intermediary organizations, which differ from other labor market organizations and social networks in the social integration of their members. The analysis contributes to the empirical study of cooperatives and to their sociological classification alongside other labor market organizations." %X "With the rise of digital capitalism, a novel occupational segment has emerged: so-called 'tech workers'. Members of this grouping render and encode the digital technologies that permeate contemporary social life. While there are many studies about highly precarious digital labourers, research on these digital professionals remains scarce. Based on 40 original interviews, the article explores the subjectivity of tech workers. Specifically, it asks whether understandings of middle-class employees as entrepreneurial selves with a holistic market orientation hold true for this grouping, or whether new cultures of subjectivation are emerging. The key finding from these interviews is that tech workers show contours of a post-neoliberal subjectivity. While the figure of the entrepreneurial self remains an alluring force, this study detected four transformative cultures of subjectivation: (1) a return of the critique of economic inequality; (2) a concern for diversity; (3) an ethic of mindfulness; and (4) a lifestyle that signals ordinariness. These distinct forms of subjectivity point to the formation of a new middle-class fraction. However, drawing on the sociology of critique, this article also considers how this transformation of subjectivity can be appropriated as yet another new spirit of capitalism." %X "Although hybrid entrepreneurship constitutes a significant share of entrepreneurial activity, research on this topic is still in its infancy. Moreover, in general entrepreneurship research only few studies have investigated intra-couple influences on the decision to be and to become self-employed. Therefore, in the study at hand, we use panel data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) to analyse whether life partners and their occupational choice relate to wage workers' propensity to enter full-time entrepreneurship either directly or indirectly via hybrid entrepreneurship. Drawing on social capital theory, this study also tests whether the results are different for men and women. Although hypothesised, we find no empirical evidence for the relevance of life partners and their occupations on direct transition to full-time entrepreneurship. For women, however, our findings do suggest that having a self-employed life partner significantly increases their propensity to enter entrepreneurship indirectly, that is, via hybrid entrepreneurship."
%X "Forms of employment are in a process of permanent flux. Especially non-standard types of employment grew in importance over time. This finding addresses two questions: Is there a continuous trend of erosion concerning standard work during the last three decades? Does the process of change go along with shifts within employment or is it associated with the creation of more employment? First of all, the results based on the German Labour Force Survey show that the erosion process cannot be seen as a cast-iron rule. Particularly during the period until entering the Corona-Crises, which was characterised by strong employment growth, non-standard work decreased. The development of the relationship between forms of employment and the labour force suggests that changes do in general not go along with a substitution of other employment, at least as employment of core workers (25-64 years) is concerned. Otherwise, the employment rates of standard employment could not have increased for this group of workers. However, further analyses show that this statement is not true for all age groups. Whereas it is valid for older workers, who participated in the labour market more strongly during the period under consideration. By contrast, we observe that for younger workers the growth of part-employment was at the expense of standard employment. How far this implies cohort effects is still an open question." %X "We use data on business registrations in the UK to study the response of firm entry to the Covid-19 pandemic. We find that firm entry increased during the pandemic, unlike typical recessions where firm entry declines. The rise in firm creation is driven by individual entrepreneurs creating companies for the first time, and particularly creating companies in online retail. We link the rise in firm creation to declines in brick-and-mortar retail footfall via Google mobility data, and show that it takes 10 weeks for a firm to be registered after a shock to footfall. To study the impacts of the newly created firms, we merge entry data with online job postings from Indeed and show that the rise in firm creation drives increased vacancy postings. However, we also show there is a higher probability of pandemic startups dissolving relative to pre-pandemic cohorts. Therefore, we conclude that booming firm creation aided the rapid recovery of the UK economy in the short run, but the long-run implications are more uncertain." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

We identify this work by the presence of a Schedule C on the tax return and/or the receipt of a Form 1099 information return. We estimate that 14.4% of California workers aged 18-64 in tax year 2016 had some independent contracting or self-employment income; about half of these workers also had earnings from traditional W-2 jobs during the year. We find that only a small share (1.4%) of workers had earnings from online labor platforms (often called gig work). Workers with low earnings were significantly more likely to earn independent contracting or self-employment income and to rely primarily or exclusively on that income. We explore the characteristics of workers engaging in independent contracting and self-employment and their distribution across family type, geography, and industry." %X "The fifth LSE-CEP survey of the self-employed was as undertaken in May 2022, following the previous four surveys of May 2020, September 2020, February 2021 and September 2021. The prior surveys reported that the self-employed have been hit particularly hard throughout the pandemic. The results of this fifth survey show that this remains the case, two years on, as the drop in incomes and profits suffered by the self-employed over the previous two years are proving to be highly persistent. This report also finds an on-going impact on the number of self-employed. While in the last two years the number of employees working in the UK has grown above pre-pandemic levels, self-employment has not recovered to pre-2020 levels. A third of self-employed report experiencing financial difficulties, dealing with basic expenses. This has not improved since August 2020. During the last months inflation has exacerbated the challenges the self-employed have to encounter. They reported the rising cost of energy as the greatest challenge facing their business. The value the self-employed place on extra support in times of hardships has remained virtually unchanged in the last two years. However, high income, male self-employed are less likely to report needing government support. Overall, the analysis shows a relative increase in the attractiveness of employee jobs vis-àvis self-employment as an employment option. As the economy has picked up, many wouldbe self-employed have moved into employee jobs. Although the self-employed have historically shown resilience to environmental uncertainty, whether they are able to absorb repeated shocks within a short space of time remains to be seen. Following the challenges associated with Covid-19 over that past two years, they have low levels of resources to cope with any renewed financial hardship and their immediate future remains vulnerable." %X "This paper studies inequalities in labour market outcomes, incomes and economic concerns across workers in Germany during the first year of the COVID-19 crisis using SOEP-CoV data. It shows that, overall, the self-employed and disadvantaged groups of workers were more severely affected by the crisis, including part-time workers and workers in marginal employment (Minijobs), low-educated and low-income workers, and to some extent women. Short-time work (Kurzarbeit), one of the central pillars of Germany's policy response to the crisis, prevented a further widening of labour market inequalities. In spite of the widespread use of Kurzarbeit, about one-in-five low-income workers who had been employed in 2019 were out of work in January/February 2021. This reflects that a higher share of low-income workers had been on part-time contracts and in Minijobs, and had lower capacity to work from home."

(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

This study deals with it based on the Taxpayer Panel for the first time. It shows significantly more hybrid self-employed than previously assumed, e.g. based on the Mikrozensus. Their number increased noticeably between 2001 and 2016, especially among women and older employed persons. Although part of these developments can be attributed to the increasing labour force participation of women and the ageing of the working-age population, the tendency of the employed to take up this form of employment has also increased. This is especially true for older individuals, married individuals and individuals with children. In 2016, the number of hybrid self-employed exceeded the exclusively self-employed for the first time." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "The attention to "left behind" places triggered a debate about alternative development approaches. Unlike prosperous regions and their prioritisation on high-tech sectors, strategies for left behind places should shift to the foundational economy, community-based social innovation and well-being. While supporting this emphasis, we see a tendency to neglect importance of research and teaching in high-tech areas for developing left behind places. Our case study in the old industrial region Ruhr shows, how unrelated initial funding for cutting-edge research sparked the development of today's cybersecurity ecosystem. The ecosystem contributes to a positive identification within the region and a dynamic start-up landscape."

%X "Prior literature on the economic impact of immigration has largely ignored changes to the composition of labor demand. In contrast, this paper uses a comprehensive collection of survey and administrative data to show that heterogeneous establishment entry and exit drive immigrant-induced job creation and a rightward shift of the productivity distribution in U.S. local industries. High-productivity establishments are more likely to enter and less likely to exit in high immigration environments, whereas low-productivity establishments are more likely to exit. These dynamics result in productivity growth. A general equilibrium model proposes a mechanism that ties immigrant workers to high-productivity firms and shows how accounting for changes to the employer distribution can yield substantially larger estimates of immigrant-generated economic surplus than canonical models of labor demand" (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "While digital financial services have made access to finance easier, faster, and less costly, helping to broaden digital financial inclusion, its impact on gender gaps varies across countries. Moreover, women leaders in the fintech industry, although growing, remain scarce. This paper explores the interaction between 'women' and 'fintech' by examining: (i) the role of women leaders on firm-level performance in the fintech industry; and (ii) the determinants of gender gaps in the usage of digital services to better understand the cross-country differences. Results indicate that greater gender diversity in the executive board is associated with better performance of fintech firms. With regard to determinants of the gender gaps in the usage of digital financial services, we find that higher financial and digital literacy of women is associated with lower gender gaps in digital financial inclusion, and that socio-cultural factors also play a key role." %X "Despite being on top of geopolitical and economic agendas, migration has continued drastically increase especially in the 21 ST century. This phenomenon has led to the rise on an intertwined migrant activity referred to as Migrant entrepreneurship, with no exception of female migrant entrepreneurship as a result of the loopholes that exist in the economic and main stream labor integration policies. Migrant entrepreneurship not only contributes to the gross domestic product of the host countries but also that of the country of origin through remittances, hence making it a win-win situation. However, most studies reveal the existence of a gender gap between the male and female migrant entrepreneurs as both groups are far from homogeneity as they come from different countries of origins, age groups, past experience and motivating factors. Nevertheless, recent studies have depicted migrants as more entrepreneurial then the host country natives. Whereas other literature credits migrant entrepreneurship as a way of integration with in the host society. Based on the mixed embeddedness and effectual approaches, the research will investigate how female migrants develop entrepreneurial orientations and its influence on venture creation. In supportive of the effectual approach, an analysis of the impact of the host country's extant resources, opportunity recognition and decision making based on volatile and uncertain environments. We will as well highlight the role of the individual habitus, social capital and networks. This research is qualitative in nature based on female migrant case studies in the context of France. Our key findings, are four-fold; First, the results reveal when it comes to migrant entrepreneurship, there is a significant gap between male and female migrant entrepreneurs. Secondly, we un cover that female migrants develop entrepreneurial orientations through five main dimensions namely: (i) Innovativeness (ii) Proactiveness (iii) Risk taking (iv) Competitive aggressiveness and (v) Autonomy. Thirdly our research highlights the key role female migrant entrepreneurs play by including sustainability in their business models. Lastly, results show that female migrant entrepreneurial orientation development can be encouraged by policies designed to promote resources fit for migrants that in the end helps them leverage their capabilities and networks to open up ventures with in the host countries and further to international markets."
