%X "In diesem Beitrag untersuchen wir die Literatur über Cluster und ihre Auswirkung auf die Gründung, die Schließung und das Wachstum von Firmen sowie über die evolutionäre Dynamik, die dem Prozess der Clusterbildung zugrunde liegt. Aus dieser ausführlichen Überprüfung geht hervor, dass zahlreiche Belege für eine Förderung von Firmengründungen, aber nur wenige Belege für eine Verbesserung des Wachstums und Überlebens von Firmen durch Cluster vorliegen. Anhand einer Reihe von offenen Fragen arbeiten wir verschiedene künftige Forschungsrichtungen heraus, bei denen die Wichtigkeit der Firmenheterogenität und die genauen Mechanismen von Lokalisierungsökonomien besonders betont werden." %X "This paper reviews the literature on clusters and their effects on the entry, exit and growth of firms as well on the evolutionary dynamics underlying the process of cluster formation. This extensive review shows that there is strong evidence that clusters promote entry, but little evidence that clusters enhance firm growth and firm survival. From a number of open questions various future research avenues are distilled that stress the importance of firm heterogeneity and the exact mechanisms underlying localization economies." %X "Technological concentration and innovation have been identified as important forces behind growth, and entrepreneurship has been recognized as an important link between new knowledge and economic growth. This article examines the influence of entrepreneurship and technology concentration on employment growth in U.S. metropolitan areas (MSAs) over the course of the last full business cycle from 1991 to 2007. The findings are in support of the efficacy of entrepreneurship together with high technology expansion in job creation. The findings question the view that entrepreneurship in and of itself, or a high but not growing high technology concentration, can be strong contributors to employment growth. In contrast, this analysis indicates that MSAs with growing high-tech activities and above-average entrepreneurship can be expected to add jobs much faster than other MSAs. The findings suggest a need for a more targeted approach to economic development and job creation." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "We examine whether having previously been self-employed is a negative signal on the job market. In a UK field experiment where two applications of otherwise equally qualified individuals were sent out in response to the same vacancies in human resource management, we find that entrepreneurs systematically receive fewer responses than non-entrepreneurs. Empirical studies that treat market wages as the opportunity cost of remaining self-employed are therefore likely to overestimate alternative earnings to entrepreneurship." %X "Entgegen der häufig postulierten Annahme, wirtschaftliche Integration führe zu einer verstärkten Spezialisierung, kann auf regionaler Ebene eine zunehmende Diversifikation ökonomischer Aktivitäten beobachtet werden. Der vorliegende Aufsatz befasst sich mit der Bedeutung von Industriedynamik, insbesondere neuen Markteintritten, für regionale Diversifikationsprozesse. Eine Analyse westdeutscher Regionen über ca. drei Jahrzehnte verweist auf eine bedeutsame Rolle von Gründungen für diese zunehmende regionale Diversifikation trotz ausgeprägter sektoraler Spezialisierungsprozesse in Gründungskohorten innerhalb einer Region sowie zwischen Regionen. Zudem kann beobachtet werden, dass der Prozess der Marktselektion eine abweichende sektorale Zusammensetzung von Neugründungen im Vergleich zur bereits bestehenden Industriestruktur begünstigt. Insgesamt sind regionale Spezialisierungsprozesse innerhalb der jeweiligen Gründungskohorten nicht weniger bedeutsam geworden, jedoch haben sich die sektoralen Schwerpunkte dieser Spezialisierung kontinuierlich gewandelt, sodass eine verstärkte regionale Diversifikation auftritt." %X "Despite predictions that economic integration leads to increasing specialization, the opposite development has been observed at the regional level. Based on nearly three decades of West German data, this paper addresses the diversification of regional economic activity and emphasizes the role of industry dynamics, specifically newly entering business cohorts. Although a strong sectoral specialization evolves in the entry cohorts within and between regions over time, entries substantially increase the overall diversity of regions. Market selection favoured less similar entries in comparison with the initial industry structure and, thus, allowed regional diversity to increase. Overall, the regional specialization processes within each entry cohort did not become less important; however, the fields of regional specialization changed continuously over time, resulting in more diversity." %X "Although it is well known that many academic business ideas are abandoned during the pre-seed phase, the underlying reasons for this phenomenon are largely unknown. I argue that very similar issues are perceived and evaluated differently by nascent entrepreneurs and, thus, have different effects on the venture-creation process. This article analyses the founding barriers preventing the organisational emergence of university spin-offs from a constructivist perspective. I explore the problems encountered by 171 nascent entrepreneurs during the preparation of academic spin-offs. My results suggest that several issues are perceived to be problematic. Unexpectedly, sales-related factors have no impact on project realisation. Issues such as fear of failure, opportunity costs and problems with recruiting co-founders have a significantly negative impact on spin-off creation." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
