%X "Whilst there is a large literature on the determinant of wages in Australia, relatively few studies have examined the determinants of wages at a state level. In this article, we present a study of the determinants of earnings in Western Australia, a state that experienced rapid growth during the mining boom of 2003-2013. We show that the relatively stronger wage growth in Western Australia since 2001 is the product of both compositional and price effects. We also report on the Western Australia and rest of Australia gender wage gaps. Our decomposition analysis of the mean gender wage gap shows that industry effects (as a result of gender segmentation across industry) account for a much larger share of the Western Australia gender wage gap than they do elsewhere in Australia, with the mining, construction and transport sectors driving the industry effects. Using quantile analysis we show that, relative to the rest of Australia, the Western Australia gender wage gaps are larger at both the bottom and the top of the wage distribution. At the median the Western Australia gender wage gap, at 2014-2016, is on par with that prevailing elsewhere in Australia, with women in both groups earning 10% less than their male counterparts, all else held equal." (Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)
%X "This article deals with the foundations, developments and current challenges facing gender equality policy as a contribution to an inclusive social policy. Based on the results of the First and Second Equality Report for Germany and further analyses, progress and deficits of equality and gender equality policy in Germany and Europe are examined. Based on three perspectives on equality policy, problems of this policy field are pointed out. Firstly, the focus is on the inconsistent signals of gender equality policy due to the design of German labour market and social policy, combined with the observation of increasing intersectional inequalities. Secondly, the complexity of gender equality policy in the multi-level political system is problematised. Finally, the de facto loss of significance and the economically motivated narrowing of gender equality policy in the EU in times of austerity are discussed. In the final section, desiderata for a strengthening of equality policy structures and approaches at the company level are outlined." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "Public discourse on pay transparency has not focused on equilibrium effects: how greater transparency impacts hiring and bargaining. To study these effects, we combine a dynamic wage-bargaining model with unique data of temporary work arrangements that differ in their level of transparency. Full transparency lowers wages by up to 25% and increases hiring by similar magnitudes. Earnings inequality falls, and employer profits rise significantly. A key intuition is high transparency commits employers to negotiating aggressively, because a highly paid worker's salary affects negotiations with other workers. We discuss implications for the gender wage gap and employers' endogenous transparency choices." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "Using a two-stage decomposition technique, this paper analyzes the role of occupational segregation in explaining the probability of women vis-à-vis men of finding high-paying jobs over the life-cycle. Jobs are classified as highly-remunerated if their compensation exceeds a threshold, which is set at different values to span the entire wage distribution. Results obtained from pooled CPS surveys indicate that the importance of occupational segregation remains virtually unchanged over the life-cycle for low- and middle-wage workers. However, women's access to high-paying occupations becomes significantly more restricted as workers age, suggesting a previously undocumented type of 'glass ceiling' in the U.S." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "This paper shows that globalization has far-reaching implications for the economy's fertility rate and family structure because they influence work-life balance. Employing population register data on new births, marriages, and divorces together with employer-employee linked data for Denmark, we show that lower labor market opportunities due to Chinese import competition lead to a shift towards family, with more parental leave taking and higher fertility as well as more marriages and fewer divorces. This pro-family, pro-child shift is driven largely by women, not men. Correspondingly, the negative earnings implications of the rising import competition are concentrated on women, and gender earnings inequality increases. We show that the choice of market versus family is a major determinant of worker adjustment costs to labor market shocks. While older workers respond to the shock rather similarly whether female or not, for young workers the fertility response takes away the adjustment advantage they typically have - if the worker is a woman. We find that the female biological clock - women have difficulties to conceive beyond their early forties - is central for the gender differential, rather than the composition of jobs and workplaces, as well as other potential causes." %X "'This report examines the evolution of real wages around the world, giving a unique picture of wage trends globally and by region.
The 2018/19 edition analyses the gender pay gap. The report focuses on two main challenges: how to find the most useful means for measurement, and how to break down the gender pay gap in ways that best inform policy-makers and social partners of the factors that underlie it. The report also includes a review of key policy issues regarding wages and the reduction of gender pay gaps in different national circumstances." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
