Abstract= {"Although male employees are increasingly making use of parental leave, gender differences in both usage and duration of parental leave are still prevalent. Based on signalling theory and the masculinities concept, the article explores the role of gender in the relationship between the incidence/duration of parental leave and wages/compensation after returning to a job. It is shown that pay gaps associated with parental leave are much more severe for male than they are for female middle managers in the German chemical industry." (Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)},
Abstract= {"This article analyses the re-entry to work of women with disabilities or chronic disease following an interruption as an important transition in their working life, in relation to their entire career and life course. Women with disabilities' disproportionately low participation in gainful employment highlights the need for further examination of this issue. We combine the social model of disability in disability studies with a gender analysis approach in the sociology of the life course to analyse the topic. Based on a broader concept or work – which includes care work and work related to disability – we analyse the impact of the family cycle and the disabling cycle on women's career trajectories. Our pilot study, which is based on qualitative expert interviews conducted in counselling centres in a rural region of Germany, gives us an insight into the conditions of disabled women's return to work. Applying a broadened concept of work, we can demonstrate how a lack of capacities, resources and cumulative disadvantages based on gender and disability led to interruptions in employment for women with disability and chronic disease. Further research is needed on the experiences of women with disabilities or chronic disease themselves which specifically takes account of educational inequalities and differences in terms of disability and age."    Abstract= {"We develop a model to study the impact on gender gaps in participation and wages of a liquidity constraint that prevents some households from paying child care. We show that this liquidity constraint generates an inefficiency and amplifies gender gaps in the labour market. In this framework, an extension of paid maternity leave duration has ambiguous effects on gender inequality. In contrast, child care subsidies, which require higher taxes, and loans, which do not, unambiguously reduce gender inequality. We illustrate the mechanisms at play in a numerical example using Spanish data." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))},

Abstract= {"Numerous studies have investigated whether the provision and generosity of parental leave affects the employment and career prospects of women. Parental leave systems typically provide either short unpaid leave mandated by the firm, as in the US, or more generous and universal leave mandated by the government, as in Canada and several European countries. Key economic policy questions include whether, at the macro level, female employment rates have increased due to parental leave policies; and, at the micro level, whether the probability of returning to work and career prospects have increased for mothers after childbirth."    Abstract= {"We present a simple new method to decompose the wage effects of displacement into components due to differences in the way that displaced and non-displaced workers are sorted across higher- and lower-paying employers (a sorting effect), differences in the quality of worker-employer matches they enter into (a matching effect), and differences in their unobservable characteristics (a selection effect). In an extended application, we apply our decomposition to understand how the determinants of displaced workers' wages in Germany changed following the 2003-2005 Hartz reforms. We find that the wages of displaced workers fell substantially after the reforms, and that over 80 percent of the decline was because they found re-employment at lower-paying employers. Sorting into worse matches explains a smaller 5-9 percent of the wage decline experienced by men, and 12-23.5 percent of the female wage decline. Collectively, the sorting and matching channels explain almost all of the post-reform decline in displaced workers' wages, and selection played little role." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))},
