%X "This article uses longitudinal data to measure the effects of ill health and informal care roles on the employment chances of mid-life women, and to examine how these effects are mediated by workplace characteristics. We find that women in jobs with lower skills/status encounter the greatest difficulty in finding accommodations for changes in their health and informal care roles. We identify an important role for paid sick leave and holiday leave in boosting employment retention. However, we find that the positive employment effects of permanent contracts do not extend to women experiencing increased informal care roles. Additionally, we do not identify a positive link between employment retention and flexible working time arrangements. However, we do establish a link between a preference for reduced working hours and employment cessation, suggesting that some women experience problems in achieving flexible working hours and that this causes some of them to leave work altogether. We argue that these findings are relevant to the design of policy initiatives aimed at lifting rates of workforce participation as part of the response to population ageing." %X "We build and parameterize a general equilibrium OLG model that explains hours worked by three active generations, education by the young, the retirement decision of older workers, and aggregate per capita growth as functions of the level and structure of taxes and government expenditures. We find that our model's predictions match the facts remarkably well for all key variables in many OECD countries. We then use the model to investigate the effects of various fiscal policy shocks. To promote employment, especially among older workers, and economic growth, our results strongly prefer labor tax cuts targeted at older workers and higher productive government expenditures financed by a reduction of non-employment benefits and/or higher consumption taxes. We also evaluate the welfare effects for current and future generations of alternative policy changes." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%X "The Great Recession had a profound effect on the retirement security of older Americans, and the slow recovery from the downturn will have a lasting impact on their quality of life. The nature of today's retirement system left older households exposed to the collapse in the equity and housing markets and induced many to plan for a later retirement. More late-career workers experienced job loss than in previous recessions, often with long jobless spells, encouraging a record number of early Social Security retirement claims and disability applications. Going forward, workers who lost a job can expect lower earnings and more instability and, potentially, poorer health. Even households that avoided job loss will have less money available for spending in retirement due to low interest rates and reduced home values. These findings emphasize the importance of Social Security as income insurance and the need for a more robust retirement income system." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

%T The crisis in the Turkish pension system : a post Keynesian perspective

%X "The Turkish pension system began experiencing some structural and fiscal difficulties in the mid-1990s: increasing dependency ratio (e.g., number of beneficiaries per active contributors) and budget transfers to close the deficit in the system. These trends resulted in a crisis in the system, and it thus underwent a major transformation as reforms moved the traditional pay-as-you-go (PAYG) scheme significantly toward privatization and personal responsibility for assuming risk. These changes reflect the interests of business and international financial institutions. This article establishes the overlooked underlying causes of the crisis by analyzing the Turkish pension data from a post Keynesian macroeconomic perspective. It argues that the problems of the Turkish pension system do not lie in the design of the traditional system (i.e., PAYG) but in the changes that have taken place in industrial relations (i.e., increasing unemployment, informal employment, and low wages) and social policy (i.e., narrowing the base and extent of social protection and financing health care and education via market mechanisms) in line with neoliberal policies pursued since the 1980s." %X "This book uses a citizenship perspective to analyse the causes and effects of early exit/early retirement, including retirement through disability benefits. Major research questions include: Which factors causes seniors to retire early? How do early retirees experience their retirement? Is early exit/retirement a 'release' from harsh working conditions? To what extent does early exit/retirement lead to economic, social and political marginalisation? Do disability pensioners experience retirement differently from regular early retirees, and if so, why? In a nutshell, do seniors retire early because they feel down and out - or free at last?
The book is based on comparable survey data among gainfully employed, regular early retirees and disability pensioners in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. This book provides new insights for academics and students interested in the mechanisms behind different types of early exit/retirement, as well as the extent to which early exit/retirement leads to social, economic and political marginalisation. The book is also of value for policy makers and lay people who are concerned with integration of vulnerable groups, and how to influence retirement decisions." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
