   Abstract= {"Immigrant women to Canada face unique challenges in gaining mastery of English or French, the country's two official languages. The study focuses on differences among women with respect to pre-migration and post-migration characteristics that position them differently with respect to language learning in the social contexts where they assert their immigrant identity. This study examines issues in language acquisition among adult immigrant women and their strategies to improve language skills within four years of arrival, using nationally representative data from the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada (LSIC). The study shows that older women, less educated women, and some immigration class groups (i.e., spouse/dependents, family class, refugees) have lower language proficiency at arrival and less chances to improve. Since immigrant women represent a heterogeneous group in terms of pre-migration language skills and access to language learning, adequate language learning support is required to facilitate their effective integration in the Canadian society."    Title= {Labor market effects of demographic shifts and migration in OECD countries},
   Year= {2019},
   Pages= {297-324},
   ISBN= {ISSN 0014-2921},
   Abstract= {"The labor force of each industrial country is being shaped by three forces: ageing, education and migration. Drawing on a new database for the OECD countries and a standard analytical framework, this paper focuses on the relative and aggregate effects of these three forces on wages across different skill and age groups over 2000-2010. The variation in the age and educational structure of the labor force emerges as the dominant influence on wage changes. The impact is uniform and egalitarian: in almost all countries, the changes in the age and skill structure favor the low-skilled and hurt the highly skilled across age groups. Immigration plays a relatively minor role, except in a handful of open countries, like Australia and Canada, where it accentuates the wage-equalizing impact of ageing and education. Emigration is the only inegalitarian influence, especially in Ireland and a few Eastern European countries which have seen significant outflows of high-skilled labor to Western European Union countries."    Abstract= {"We examine the consequences of compressing secondary schooling for university enrollment. An unusual education reform in Germanyreduced the length of academic high school while simultaneously increasing the instruction hours in the remaining years. Accordingly,students receive the same amount of schooling but over a shorter period of time. Based on a difference-in-differences approachand using administrative data on all students in Germany, we find that this reform decreased university enrollment rates.Moreover, students are more likely to delay their enrollment, to drop out of university, and to change their major. We discusssupply-side restrictions, age differences, and increased workload during school as potential mechanisms and present back-of-the-envelopecost - benefit considerations showing that the earnings gain from an extended labor market participation may still offset theadverse effects presented in this study."    Title= {How skill requirements affect the likelihood of recruitment of older workers in Poland : The indirect role of age stereotypes},
   Year= {2019},
   Pages= {21},
   ISBN= {ISSN 0950-0170},
   Abstract= {"This article analyses the role of age stereotypes in the employability of older people. Unlike in existing studies, we shift emphasis from a direct consideration of stereotypes, focusing instead on skill requirements during recruitment. Using five waves of an employer survey from Poland, we assess how the likelihood of recruiting people over 50 years old depends on the skill requirements of the post. This study uses a real-life framework by referring to existing vacancies and actual requirements that reflect labour demands at the scale of an entire national labour market. The results suggest that some requirements lead to age bias during recruitment, and the chances of an older candidate being hired are especially hindered in jobs requiring computer, physical, social, creative and training skills. By illustrating an indirect link between age stereotypes and age discrimination, this study contributes to an understanding of the mechanisms that reduce employability of older people."    Abstract= {"As the workforce ages, how will the work lives of older people evolve? One way to ease into retirement is to move to the gig economy where workers choose hours and intensity of work that fit their needs and capabilities. However, older workers are often reaping the benefits of the latter end of an implicit contract while gig economy workers are paid their marginal product. We show that age/earnings profiles in the traditional labor market are different than for Uber drivers. While the move to the gig economy generates flexibility, older workers are paid less than their younger coworkers." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))},
